Not sure whether to pick a 3U or 4U racket? This guide from Badminton Warehouse breaks down how weight affects swing speed, energy transfer, stability, and stamina—with practical takeaways for singles and doubles.
The “U” rating is a frame weight class (typically unstrung and without an overgrip):
A few grams can meaningfully change how a racket swings, transfers energy, and stabilizes on impact.
BW Insight: In rapid exchanges, 4U helps you get the racket into position sooner; in composed back-court setups, 3U rewards full, confident swings.
Note that balance (head-heavy vs even vs head-light) and shaft stiffness also affect power. A head-heavy 4U can still hit very hard if you generate speed.
| Attribute | 3U (85–89 g) | 4U (80–84 g) |
|---|---|---|
| Swing Speed | Moderate; rewards full swings | Faster head speed; great for quick rallies |
| Energy Transfer | Higher momentum & smash weight | Leans on acceleration & whip |
| Stability at Impact | More stable; absorbs vibration | Slightly less torsional resistance |
| Arm Fatigue | Higher over long sessions | Lower; easier endurance |
| Best Format | Singles / back-court power | Doubles / quick net play |

These rackets are available in both 3U and 4U versions at Badminton Warehouse:
⚠️ Note: The Yonex Astrox 88D Pro and Astrox 88S Pro are only available in 4U versions at this time.
Generally yes due to greater mass, but a head-heavy 4U with fast acceleration can still hit very hard. Technique, timing, and string setup matter a lot.
Power-oriented 3U users often prefer slightly higher tensions for control. Speed-oriented 4U users may like mid tensions for a livelier response.
Many players keep one 3U and one 4U of the same model to switch based on match format. If you only want one, choose the weight that matches your most frequent role.
